National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST) measures success with their OMAX 5555 JetMachining Center

Headquartered in Gaithersburg, MD, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a non-regulatory federal agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce. NIST's mission is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness. The NIST Fabrication Technology Division, the agency's full-service fabrication shop, has acquired an OMAX 5555 JetMachining Center to help meet its researchers' needs in conducting measurement research. The Fabrication Technology Division produces a wide variety of instruments such as ultra-high vacuum components, radiation shielding and trapping tools, instrument support structures, and standard reference materials. Since it is not a high-production job shop, many of its internal projects are unique for research and development or small-run fabrication requests.

Metals Technology and Structural Maintenance sections in the 6 MXS at MacDill AFB

Challenge: The Metals Technology and Structural Maintenance sections in the 6 MXS at MacDill AFB are responsible for structural repairs on 16 KC-135R/T aircraft and 283 aerospace ground equipment assets. They also provide capabilities for other agencies in the Tampa Bay area to include CENTCOM, SOCOM, JCSE, NOAA, Coast Guard, and Marine units. In November 2007, the Metals Technology section from the Maintenance Squadron re-evaluated their manufacturing processes with the intent to optimize base level fabrication capabilities. The section proposed a new cutting edge machine which could potentially enhance productivity and reduce material waste. This machine is the OMAX Water Jet Cutting Machine. read more

Which part of the government maintains these aircraft? If I told you, they would have to kill me. Well, not really, but the federal government is ethically bound not to endorse or promote a particular product, or provide glowing testimonials. However, it is remarkable to note, just as one example, how much money they are currently saving by fabricating their own gaskets to meet maintenance demands. read more
